"It is not what you say or feel that makes you who you are, it is what you do or fail to do."

“I bend and mould my words like the blacksmith bends and mould metals and creates.”

Jerlyn Williams has a background in the science field however her passion is in art as she has always been creative. Science is a very rigid discipline so she finds her creative release in writing. She graduated from Dominica State College in 2010 with her Associates’ Degrees in Biology and Literature. Then went to graduate from Grambling State University Cum Laude with a Bsc. General Biology in 2020. She began writing poetry at the tender age of 8 years old which after years of practice has evolved to what she is today as a writer.

The depth in her writing comes from struggling to fit in as a young girl and an unhappy marriage between her parents. Therefore, she used reading at first to escape and then poetry to express the feelings for which she had no listening ear or other outlet to express.

What she lacks in social grace and charisma, she found in the written word as a refuge. She would like to think of herself as a “Wordsmith” as compared to a blacksmith.

Artist Statement

Art for Jerlyn is a form of self expression in a world of chaos, you create a world which becomes your own and a means of escape or refuge like a good novel. It is also a free space to say or do what you feel is right without judgement.
